How to: Pattern vs Reality 14: Crochet Doberman

I am a huge dog lover. I already owned one dog, Ruthie, when I started dating my fiancé, and then we ended up adopting Bella, who was at the time a 12-year-old senior dog. Less than a year later, my fiancé came home from a “wellness” event at work with Shadow, a puppy of unknown breed who now lives full-time with my in-laws. So when I heard that my co-worker had decided to adopt senior Doberman, Max, I decided to create a crochet Doberman in his honor. I figured my co-worker would use it to decorate.

I searched online and ended up finding a cool designer who puts all of her patterns online, ad-free: FREE PATTERNS BY H and she had a pattern for a Doberman!

Difficulty: Advanced beginner. The only reason I don’t classify this as beginner is because there are extensive color changes. I wasn’t as good at color changes yet, so I didn’t have that clean delineation on the nose. It otherwise standard beginner stitches.
Stitches used: chain, single crochet, decrease stitch.
Time taken: 15 hours
Yarn: Caron Simply Soft in Chocolate and Black

Pattern vs Reality:

I didn’t use safety eyes because I didn’t want to risk Max pulling them out and eating them.

Max focused intently on Mini Max the moment Mini Max arrived home.

My co-worker cautiously offered Mini Max to Max under close supervision (yarn can be dangerous for dogs and cats).

Max and his pal

Max loves Mini Max. Max takes Mini Max from room to room around the house and sleeps with him. Despite being rough with his other stuffed animals, Max is gentle with Mini Max. It’s not clear to us whether Max realizes Mini Max is a crochet Doberman or an actual puppy, but he treats it with care. This was one of my favorite crochet items to make and I’m so happy I did.
