Storing or moving long loose strands of yarn is asking for disaster. You’ll want to make sure you wind it up. There are many YouTube videos about how to wind a ball by hand. If you think that will be relaxing, or your budget is tight, then go on ahead, but if you want to skip over that and get to crocheting, I highly recommend you buy a yarn ball winder. It’s not expensive — you can get a lot of good ones online for cheap.
I bought and like the Knit Picks Hand Operated Ball Winder. At the time of posting, it’s about $22 on Amazon.
Here’s the YouTube video I used on how to use it: How to Use Knit Picks Yarn Ball Winder – YouTube

It was a game changer for me. I definitely recommend adding this to your toolkit. If you have questions, feel free to pop them in the comments and I’ll get back to you.
