How to: Pattern vs Reality 17: Crochet Orca Whale

crochet orca

I have always loved dolphins and orca whales. I’m particularly a sucker when they’re paired together — one of the first paintings I hung in my current home was a drawing of a dolphin and an orca whale I found on Etsy. So, naturally, I bought both patterns from Flying Dutchman and made both the crochet dolphin and crochet orca.

Difficulty: Beginner+. It’s not that difficult, but it has stitches that very early beginners are less familiar with such as dc2tog (which means crochet 2 double crochet stitches together. It’s a variation on decreasing).
Stitched Used: Single CrochetIncreaseDecrease, ChainDouble Crochet, Slip Stitch
Time Taken: 15 hours

Pattern vs Reality:

I used different colored yarn than in the example one, which made my black stitches more visible, and my white stitches a fairly different shade. But I got the shape mostly the same and it was a fairly fun pattern to work on. I might try it again with different yarn next time.

Tips:

I’ve seen beginners in the Facebook groups I’m in get tripped up by this stitch, so here’s a reference if you’re unsure:
