How to: Pattern vs Reality 15: Crochet Seal

I have a coworker who really likes the joke “Seal of Approval” where instead of a seal similar to a stamp, you have an animal seal. So I decided to make her a crochet seal, while another coworker made the sign of approval. I was quite happy with the free pattern I used for the crochet Doberman, so I took to search engines again with a query of “free crochet seal pattern”, and was delighted to find the pattern for Sammy the Seal by Little Muggles. The designer has several cute free patterns on her website, and they all seem beginner friendly.

Difficulty: Beginner. I’ll note that while the Woobles has videos that go along and teach you everything stitch by stich, when you do patterns from other sources, you’ll need to learn the stitches through other means. That said, every stitch used in this pattern is straightforward and simple. The only difficulty is learning to make a pom-pom, but I learned a lot from that experience.

Stitches Used: Mostly single crochet, increase, and decrease. There is one round that uses double crochet.

Yarn Used: Caron Simply Soft

Pattern vs Reality:

I did not prefer the whiskers so I skipped that part, and I embroidered the eyes for flexibility if she wanted to keep it around a child. I could’ve been a bit more patient with the embroidering of the mustache. In general, I tend to be impatient with embroidery, and that’s really the main way to step up my amigurumi game.

I loved this design! I thought it was super cute and straightforward, and I highly recommend it for beginners. I used various Youtube videos to figure out the pom pom and was really delighted with the end result. My coworker’s daughter ended up commandeering the Seal, and it is off living its best life.

Tips: If you struggle with the pom-pom, take to Youtube until you find a tutorial that clicks for you.
