This pattern is an ode to my favorite animal: dolphins. I love dolphins. My favorite necklace features dolphins and a highlight of my first trip to Hawaii was being able to see dolphins from the boat. The designer of this pattern, Flying Dutchman, has an artistic style that is sort of in the middle between the hyper-detailed, realistic (to the extent mythical creatures can be realistic) designs of Megan Lapp of Crafty Intentions, and then the more exaggerated, cartoon-ish styles of more traditional amigurumi. I love it and I was eager to hop in to make the crochet dolphin.
Difficulty: Beginner+. It’s not that difficult, but it has stitches that very early beginners are less familiar with such as dc2tog (which means crochet 2 double crochet stitches together. It’s a variation on decreasing).
Stitched Used: Single Crochet, Increase, Decrease, Chain, Double Crochet, Slip Stitch
Time Taken: 10 hours
Pattern vs Reality:
I did something funky that ended up giving mine a curve, but I like it. It looks like it is mid-swim. I really loved how simple and cute this pattern was.
Tips:
I’ve seen beginners in the Facebook groups I’m in get tripped up by this stitch, so here’s a reference if you’re unsure:
